AI search visibility, without the jargon

What does AI search visibility mean for my company, and what do I actually do about it?

Measured: at least 10 runs per engine, spent adaptively, across 5 AI engines · 95% confidence interval on every figure · open data (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.21612952 (opens in a new tab)) · how we measure

AI assistants now answer buying questions directly. When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for the best tool in your category, the assistant names a few companies and cites a few pages. If you are not one of them, you are not in that conversation -- and you will not see it in your analytics, because no click ever happened. AI search visibility is the plain version of that: how often do the assistants name you, and which of your pages do they cite when they do?

How to tell whether this is your problem

Ask the question your buyer would ask, in the words they would use, in two or three assistants. Not "who is the best company called X" -- the real question, like "what should a small team use for this". Write down who gets named and which pages get cited. Do it a few times, because the answer moves. If your competitors keep appearing and you do not, that is the gap. If you appear but the cited page is a review site rather than your own, that is a different gap with a different fix.

What actually moves it

Assistants cite pages that answer the question directly, early, and in a form they can lift. That rewards specific, checkable writing and punishes brochure copy. It also rewards being written about somewhere other than your own site, because third-party pages are cited far more often than brand-owned ones. Most of the work is therefore ordinary: answer the real questions plainly on your own pages, publish something worth citing, and get it in front of the places your category already reads. There is no trick underneath it.

What a month of this looks like

A baseline measurement first, so there is something to compare against later. Then a short list of changes, in priority order, with the reason each one is expected to matter. Then the same measurement again, so the change is visible or it is not. You get the raw runs either way. The honest part is that a month is often too short to separate a real move from ordinary variation, which is why we report intervals and say so rather than declaring a win.

What we will not tell you

No one can guarantee a citation, and we will not tell you otherwise. We will not hand you a number without its date and its margin, because a bare number invites a decision it cannot support. And we will not pretend the tooling is more certain than it is: where a figure cannot be measured with the runs we have, the page says so. If that makes a report less impressive, it also makes it usable.
